foot monthly

April 09
Hello

Welcome to April's edition of Foot Monthly; our monthly newsletter keeping you up-to-date on all the latest foot products and treatments. Please add footmonthly@supplefeet.com to your address book to ensure you receive our newsletter.

It is so nice to have the longer days and we as a family have already noticed just how much dirtier the kids are getting as they run around barefooted! The foot is such a mobile, supple structure that it needs to have shoes kicked off and given some freedom. This is especially true for children with their growing feet.

The many bones in the feet do not fully mature until 18 to 21 years of age so it is important to fit shoes properly throughout childhood. As current estimates are that 75% of parents buy and fit shoes themselves, i.e. without the services of a properly trained shoe fitter, then we need to make sure they have some knowledge on how to do this.  Already, our kids have outgrown their shoes bought for them last August. It is always an interesting experience getting them shod!

As Easter is upon us we look to that feeling of walking on eggshells and how to avoid it and for our chicks a detailed look at the shoes they need. Also while the press is still full of images of extra high heels, we still need to walk and welcome the shoe manufacturers who have updated the old classic penny loafers; a small heel, well made leather shoes, a shoe to actually spend your day in.

If you have acquired a fungal infection over the winter months of warm boots and socks then we now recommend the use of Lamisil Once ® as an apply-once-leave-for-three-days- and-job done!

My foot post Hyprocure® is still a joy and it is good to be back in high heels and dancing again.

Please join my blog at emmasupple.blogspot.com; I would welcome your comments.  You can also join our Facebook group and be part of the conversation.

If you have any foot problems you would like answering then please get in touch, or book an appointment to see our clinicians at our Enfield clinic , 020 8367 9292. I hope you enjoy this issue.

Happy Easter!

Kind Regards,

Shoe buying guide for children

Shoe buying guide for childrenChildren should ideally have several pairs of shoes.

  • one pair of school shoes
  • one pair of "at-home" shoes which can be a pair of trainers. For general foot health it is important to get them to change their shoes once they get home.
  • A pair of trainers, sports specific if needed
  • a pair of sandals for the summer
  • and a pair of wellingtons!

We have a budding ballerina in our household and so after school activities bring their own shoe requirements. Dance alone accounts for three extra pairs of shoes for daughter number one alone. (Tap, Ballet and Character!)

Lamisil Once®
A one-off treatment for tinea pedis or athlete's foot - Very effective

Instead of applying anti-fungal cream once or twice a day, consider using this product.  Contains the active anti-fungal agent terbinafine and forms a fine protective film over the affected parts.

Apply in-between the toes and down the outside borders of the feet and it is best to share the contents of the tube between both feet. Leave the feet to dry for approximately 10 minutes, and then put back on shoes and socks.

No washing of feet for three days and in that time the fungus will have been effectively treated.

Walking on egg shells - Painful seed corns

Walking on egg shellsAs Easter is here we are looking at painful feet; sometimes likened to walking on eggshells. This can be for many reasons but chief amongst these is corns and callus.

A small spattering of tiny little corns across the ball of the foot is called seed corns or heloma mille and these form tiny little areas of callus that act like pin pricks. These need to be professionally debrided and advice on how to avoid them includes regular moisturising of the skin, taking the pressure of the area with shoe choices and using silicon insoles under the ball of your foot to reduce shearing stresses.

Shoe of the Month - Penny Loafers

Penny LoafersAfter seasons of too high, too extreme heels and seemingly limited other options it is pleasing to see the return of the classic penny loafer. With a small heel to arch the foot and deep areas for toes these are a good investment. Well made leather versions are long-term purchases that in a good shaped foot can really do some service. Fashionable again after a long time and stocked  by major shoe retailers including Top Shop, they are slowly replacing the ubiquitous flat  ballet pump seen everywhere.

The only downside is they are a slip-on shoe so watch for crunching up of toes.

Embarrassing Question - Why do my feet smell?

Calmurid CreamFeet sweat just like the rest of the body. However, if that sweat collects and goes stale it can become a haven for fungal and bacterial infections. Add to this nylon tights and plastic shoes and all can contribute to olfactory assault!

Remedies
Good foot hygiene is the basis. Wash feet daily and dry well. Apply a moisturising cream daily, even for sweaty feet as this helps condition the skin on the foot.

If it persists do seek the advice of a podiatrist to treat potential fungal and bacterial problems.
