Heel Pain
This is an often very painful, condition that affects one or both heels. It used to be known as a heel spur and although it is a good description of the pain felt, it is not directly related to the bone itself whether or not the spur is present.
Plantar fasciitus is the other term used to describe heel pain. This relates to the thick tendon that supports the underside of the foot. The origin of this thick, immensely important, tendon is from the heel bone and it inserts via 5 separate slips into the tips of toes; rather like a supporting hand.
The full picture as to why this condition is caused is still unclear but we know that excessive flattening out of the arch can cause damage and micro tears to the tendon that over time start to become inflamed and the inflammation starts. Plantar fasciitus is much less common in children and if they get heel pain then it is more commonly a self-limiting condition called Severs. – see your podiatrist.
The good news is that this is a condition is treatable and in approx 85% of cases the simple combination of stretches, insoles and taping with a little bit of footwear savvy thrown in, suffices.
Other treatments include a steroid injection (done under a local anaesthetic) and advice on further treatments. In the USA the incidence of heel pain has gone up so much due to obesity levels that they are referring to heel pain as an "epidemic".
At Supplefeet we also prescribe the use of the Beech sandals as these follow the natural line of the plantar fascia they are the closest we know of getting a proper stretch on that tendon and being very good for your feet as well.
If you are afflicted by this, immediately move to a combination of high heels (cowboy boots for men!) and trainers with a cushioning insole. Then book an appointment to see your podiatrist for assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management.
