Bunions

The medical term for these is Hallux valgus. They are usually inherited and can occur in children and adults. They are a structural deformity of the great toe joint, where the bones move gradually into a position of mal-alignment. Poorly fitting shoes will make this condition worse; they do not cause it.

Our podiatrists can give advice on appropriate measures to reduce discomfort. Surgical correction is an option and can be very effective in straightening the toe and alleviating the discomfort.

The goal of surgical correction for bunions is to restore normal alignment and function of the great toe joint. The large bony prominence is removed and the bone to moved back into a normal position. Screws and/or pins may be used to hold the bone in proper position. If the joint is significantly damaged from arthritis it may need to be replaced with an artificial joint.

Following bunion surgery, the foot is bandaged and a post operative shoe is worn for one week. Trainer style shoes may be worn after the second week. Exercise and prolonged standing are restricted for the first 6-8 weeks. A home exercise programme is important for regaining the strength and flexibility. You may steadily resume activities and wear more fashionable shoes as healing occurs.

When conservative treatment options are no longer providing the comfort you need, consultation with your podiatrist is advised to discuss surgical options.
